Smoke and Ashes~

Here follows a song for a book that is really on my heart to write. I'm not going to reveal details, hehehe, but I hope you enjoy the song, something a character sings before a great final battle.
The cover photography was taken by my sister, Emma, across the road from where we live, and I edited it with a program called Corel.

Smoke and ashes,
Broken glasses,
Scatter the floor.

Feral gashes,
Lightning flashes,
Rain starts to pour.

Waiting, wondering,
Outside: thundering…
What are we fighting for?

Wandering, blundering,
As a shunned thing…
Take away the war!

But dawn will rise
‘pon blood-red skies,
Oh, the World is dark.

If I have one prayer,
I will swear
That none shall crush my heart.

For far too long
Has this great wrong
Beaten back the light.

Sing a hope song,
Both pure and strong,
To turn back the night.

Cling to your faith,
Flee the dark wraiths,
Hold your children tight…

Wipe your stained face,
Take up your mace,
Now we stand and fight!

But dawn will rise
‘pon blood-red skies,
Oh, the World is dark.

If I have one prayer,
I will swear
That none shall crush my heart.

Thousands shall fall,
Hundreds give all,
To defend what’s good.

‘Tis a grave call:
Form a steel wall,
Join in brotherhood.

Fight for freedom,
For your kingdom,
Remember how it stood.

In the sunlight,
Pure, gold sunlight,
As again it should…

And dawn will rise
‘pon blood-red skies,
Oh, the World is dark.

Hear my one prayer,
My last prayer,
That none shall crush my heart.

Lady of the Woodland~

Lady of the woodland
A shy beauty disguised,
Walks alone through the wood
A shadow to your eyes.

Invisible if it be her wish,
The moon is her guiding star,
She roams the darkened trees
During the midnight hours.

Hooded in black sky,
Cloaked in Winter starlight
A warrior, a dancer,
A nymph of the night.

Like leaves of nightshade:
Feared by much,
Lovely to look upon,
Yet lethal to touch.

A deadly beauty to behold,
The mist at her command.
She drifts on through the fog-
Lady of the woodland.

A Flame in the Night~

Oh, little fire,
Little friend in the dark,
When e're I am lonely, you are at my command
With the single strike of a spark.

Your warm glow pulses,
Your crimson flames dance,
You are my refuge,
My comfort, my chance.

Elusive flickering fingers,
On a cold winter's night-
You are there to warm me:
My hope and guiding light.

You illustrate a swarm of fireflies,
With an upward shower of sparks;
You lick up any substance,
Dry leaves, twigs, and barks.

Promise me you'll never leave,
But guard me always through the night,
A caster of ghostly shadows,
Always strong, and ever bright.

Night~

(I was assisted in the writing of this poem by my little 8-year-old sister, Ella.)

In the west,
The sun sets,
And darkness claims the land.

The moon so pale,
The sky is veiled,
And night extends her inky hand.

Birds cease their call,
A sign of nightfall,
Tucking their heads 'neath a warm wing.

All is still,
Stars shine o'er the hill,
And near the pond the peepers sing.

Oh, how silent-
Oh, how lovely-
The robin in her nest.

Oh, how calm-
Oh, how peaceful-
The way night brings us rest.
